Las Vegas Gambit

The NBC game show with Wink Martindale ran from 1980-81 in which I saw a clip of when the lady fell after getting 21 on a WXYZ special back in 1983. I'm not sure what time did Las Vegas Gambit was shown on WXYZ. It aired at 10am the timeslot of NBC and WXYZ had the last 30 minutes of Kelly & Company.

What was your favorite channel 7/ abc bumper from back in the day, music or otherwise?

For some strange reason, I always liked the late night 30 second or less bumper just before the late movie. It was an nighttime aerial shot of the Renaissance Center with the 7 logo in the middle with some kind of Pink Floyd-ish keyboard loop. When that was on, I knew it was late. Some of the old Saturday morning bumpers were cool too, not counting School House Rock.

I thought this was kinda funny so I posted it. My girlfriend was running some errands on Garfield rd. near Canal in Clinton twp. and she passed Bill Bonds while he was in the turn lane. I asked her how she knew it was him and she said the license plate on the black Buick s.u.v. said BBONDS. Go figure huh. Retro Television Network

WXYZ is now broadcasting the Retro Television Network (RTN) on digital subchannel 7.2. A lot of fun shows and retro-commercials. Get Smart is on at 11PM followed by the Twilight Zone. Hogan's Heroes is on at 8 PM. It also has Matlock at 10 PM, but I don't know why as it's rerun consistently on many other channels. In any case if you have a Digital Set or a converter box it's certainly worth checking out. If not, then apply for that $40 coupon, get your box and join in on the fun!

Question about network slogans (re: Detroit TV)

Does anyone know if WXYZ used any past ABC slogans as its own Detroit version of the network's ad campaign?

I was just wondering, since many network affiliates have done the same thing in the past.

I know WJBK used CBS' 'Reach for the Stars' and 'Great Moments' as its own local version of the network ad campaign.

Ch 4 used NBC's 'Come Home to the Best' and 'The Place to Be' from the late 1980s/early 1990s.

Back in the mid 70's, Bill Bonds and John Kelly co-anchored the Channel 7 6:00 Action News, the top-rated news program in Detroit. Bonds and Kelly were a perfect match in front of the cameras but behind the scenes there was a lot of friction between the two men. Does anyone have any inside information on what caused the bad blood between them and did it ever come out on the air?

i'm curious if anyone out there knows how old billy bonds is. the most reliable information puts him in his early 70's but i've never heard anyone mention his exact age. also, does anyone know what year did billy bonds become the lead anchor at channel 7? i'm guessing it was the early to mid 70's.

I have no memory of watching this as a kid. The only recollection I have of this show being on is when Great Aunt Jen stayed with us for a few days she asked when it was on. This is back in 1978.

While looking through an old detroit tv guide I came across a couple of listings for this show called THE BAXTERS. Chanell eleven --Sat. nite at seven. Here is the discription of one episode:

"Fred learns that one of Jonah's teachers is an avowed homosexual. Fred: Larry Keith.
(Joe Ashton is the host for the audience discussion after the episode)."

The other listings also name a host for audience discussion afterwards.

Does anyone remember when channel 7 canceled their afternoon movie. My guess is it happened around late 81 early 82. This was when everybody was nuts about General Hospital, and channel 20 stoped showing Batman at 4:00. (okay I'm on a tangent.)

I think the last time WXON showed Batman was fall of 1984. Since then it's been shown on CBN, (now ABC Family) FX, Scifi, Nickelodeon, and TV Land. I think channel 20 showed them unedited. (Still on a tangent.)

Is there anyone out there with information on this show as my grandmother used to drive from windsor to play her guitar and sing there once a week. Any Information about the show or where to go to get further information about her and the show would be greatly appreciated. I used to watch these like crazy! It was interesting to see if my favorite celebs were as good as me or my friends on an atheletic level. Taking them away from there illusive acting images I found it made them more real watching them goof up and was just an all round good time. I wonder why they stopped?? If they did it now it would be more interesting as there are way more networks and it would be a more real "olympic" type celebrity celebration.

Does anyone remember this 1981-1982 1/2 hour show that spotlighted a different year each week and the events pertaining to it? This was for the ABC owned and operated stations (WABC 7 New York, WLS 7 Chicago, KABC 7 Los Angeles, KGO 7 San Francisco, KOAT 7 Albertuque, and WXYZ 7 in Detroit) and they used a different local host for each of the stations.

Does anyone remember the late night program Detroit's flamboyant cult leader Prophet Jones had on WXYZ-TV in 1955? I found an article in a long lost African American magazine called Hue with wonderful pics of Jones in a damsel type hat, but would love to see any clips of the show or hear some impressions from his audience. A friend of mine said her father and his frat used to stay up late watching the prophet while he was in college in Ann Arbor, suggesting just how effective Jones was in...
