Re: A & W's | ||

I know Gary. It's so awesome to see. We put our cars in Sloan's car show every summer and go into Sloan several times a day both days. I love it there. I believe the Flushing A&W cruises start next month (April) on the 3rd Saturday. Can't wait. I'll be out in the garage today making sure the cars are almost ready.

Gary... I know that Hardee's on Corunna quite well. I've been there at least twice!
And Keith... Is it ok if I give a list of every former Hardee's in Michigan? Also... Big Boy used to be a drive-in restaurant?!?!?! |

Another Dog 'n Suds | ||

There use to be a Dog N Suds in Midland as well. It was on South Saginaw just south of Washington Street. They knocked it down in the early '70's. Now, there is a plaza with K-Mart, etc. The K-Mart probably opened in '76 or '77.
I think there was a Burger Chef on N. Saginaw just north of Eastman Rd. That turned into a Hardee's then I don't know what. |

I've been away form the board for several days now, sorry I didn't see your post earlier about the Hardee's list. Anyway, thanks for the link--great work, buddy. Happy Haunting!

Roxy Drive-In Restaurant | ||
|
While in Benton Harbor a few years back I found Roxy's Drive-In Restaurant. I was under the impression that it was closed for good--it also could have been a bit early for the season while I was there. From the looks of it however, everything in Benton Harbor has gone or is going under unless being "revitalized" by St. Joseph's upper-middle class artists.
So does anyone have any information on this? Was it a chain or unique to the area/Michigan? |

kalamazoo drive-ins | ||
|
There are 3 A&W drive-ins in Kalamazoo that I can think of. One is still open and the other two are closed.
The open one is on the triangle formed by Portage Rd., Lovers Lane and Cork St. There's a closed one on Westnedge just a little north of Kilgore, and there's another closed one that I believe is on Kalamazoo Ave. Also, if you're in the Kalmazoo area, my favorite drive-in has always been the West Lake drive-in on Portage Rd. in Portage. They have really good food and it's right on West Lake! |

I second that!!! West Lake is great! Is it open yet this season, Aylevaroo?

Last I knew, the West Lake drive in wasn't open yet, e 50 e, but it's been a week or two since I've been by it.
I also have to make a correction to my previous statement that the A&W on Westnedge was closed. I don't know what I was thinking, but I drove by it today and it's very much open! |

I remember driving up to A&W after a long day's work and ordering a gallon of Root Beer to go.
There was an A&W in my hometown of Lake Odessa, on the corner of Jordan Lake Street and 2nd Avenue. It was owned by a classmate of mine's parents. I recall my classmate passing out coupons for free A&W Root Beer at the start of each year. The building is now the home of a Thai-American restaurant. |

Just an update:
The A&W drive-up restaurant in Berkely on 12 Mile still has great footlong coneys and incredible root beer served in chilled glass mugs. It's still a perfect stop on a sunny day with oldies playing on the radio. I took my wife there yesterday. She had never been to a drive-up like this since she was a little girl and it had been a coupel years since I stopped by. She was enchanted and I believe our healthy diet we were trying to keep up is going to be shot to hell this summer! |

Hey guys, those of you who like to go to cruises, don't forget that the Flushing A&W has one on the 3rd Saturday of the month. The first of the season was last month and obviously the next one is on the 17th, next Saturday. I'll be there in my 65 Chevelle like I was last month. It was great as usual and I looked forward to those hotdogs all winter.

I just got back from Thomas Video in Clawson (my semi-annual jaunt over there), and noticed an A&W right across the street. Cool. I made a vow that I'd stop in for a root beer and burger the next time I'm over that way. I haven't been to an A&W in years! Looking forward to it.
So hey, what should I order when I go? What's good there? Any recommendations from you veterans? Happy Haunting!

Go for the foot long coney with a DRAFT root beer in the mug. Eat it there, don't get it to go. There's something about a real A&W in a frosted mug!

If it's not too out of the way for you, Keith, make the trip to the Berkley location. It seems so cool and old-fashioned to have them come out to your car and hand the tray on your window. I don't believe the Clawson location does that.
If it's not convenient, definitely go to the Clawson location and get a chilled mug of root beer. Mmmmm! If it wasn't so darned cold and gloomy, I'd go for one on lunch today. But i'ts gonna be sunny one day, right? And I'm also way overdue on a trip to Thomas Video. |

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! And, John, I'll see about making the Berkley location this summer, thanks for the tip. Funny, though, from the road the Clawson location looked like it was set up for them to bring it out to your car. I was assuming they did. Oh well.
OFF-TOPIC WARNING!!!!.... Btw, I don't like Thomas Video now near as much as I used to. For two reasons: 1) All the really good, primo used cult/horror videos and laserdiscs, which were the main reasons I used to go there, have all been pretty much picked over now by savvy collectors and ebay sellers. You can dig as much as you like through all the used tapes and LDs now and you won't find near the amount of hidden (and sometimes valuable!) gems you used to routinely find there 3 or 4 years ago. That place used to be a goldmine for me! Now it's just all picked over. And if you know the "good stuff" and you know what they used to have there, you can tell. Heck, now they list ALL their used tapes and LDs on the web, for crying out loud! Not good for video store treasure hunters like me. 2) Their prices, whether it be a dusty old, beaten-up used video of ANY movie (that would go for a dollar or two on ebay or at the flea market, as they used to at Thomas Video!), a USED DVD (that you could get on ebay for $10 or less), or a new, factory-sealed DVD that you could get at nearly any department or entertainment store like Best Buy, Target, or Circuit City for under $20, are almost always outrageously marked-up! Truly bargain-bin "$1" tapes are usually $14--20(!). Used DVDs are priced very near the retail price of a new one (or higher!). New DVDs are almost always $24.99 or more, when you can get the same ones anywhere else for $17.99 (or less!) in most cases if you just hit a couple mainstream stores. Their prices are just too high, period. I've went there many times over the past couple of years (Saturday is a good example) excited to look through their decidely horror/cult-slanted selection of DVDs, and indeed found many titles I had been looking for locally and wanting to pick up really badly, only to walk out with absolutely nothing to show for it (even though I had plenty of money to burn for the trip and intended to buy stuff), simply because I will not be gouged like that. No way. I've literally went home numerous times recently, and found the same DVDs at Amazon or wherever, or on ebay, for much, much less, and bought them there--receiving most in time for next weekend or close to it. They make it really, really hard to want to actually buy videos or DVDs there anymore. Happy Haunting!

That's too bad about your lackluster trip to Thomas. I admit I haven't bought anything there and am basically enchanted with their huge selection of rentals. I am no spokesman for them, but it would make sense that Amazon.com would beat the pants off a store like Thomas Video. They don't have the same overhead that a small place has to contend with. So the small places like Thomas Video try to make it up with service by qualified individuals (I would hope). Amazon.com and Thomas Video each have their niche.
As for web changing the face of sales, that is so true! It has its downfalls like you mentioned. But it has its plus sides too. I have sold used DVDs I didn't want anymore for much more (and much easier) online than I might otherwise. So did you get to A&W, at least, for a coney and root beer? |
