As for the A&W, nope, haven't gotten over there yet. I'll post here when I do, though!

I hear what you're saying, John. But for me it still comes down to simple economics and convienience--the prices are just way too high, the selection not what it used to be in most areas, and nowadays there are just too many reasonable, convienient alternatives to turn to. 'Course, as far as a rental store goes they might rock, I don't know, they're not quite "local" enough for me to use them for that on a regular basis, I've always gone there to just buy things. So if you go there to buy stuff they stink (IMO), if you go there to rent they're prolly great!

Kalamazoo Drive-Ins | ||
|
Okay,so there aren't really any A&Ws in Kalamazoo, they're called the Root Beer Stand, and I've been amazed to see that all three are open this year. I can't remember the last time the one on Kalamazoo Ave. was open, so that's cool. If anyone is ever in the Kzoo area, be sure and give them a try. Also, West Lake Drive-In in Portage is open for the season. Great food with a nice view of West Lake. (Just bring your sun glasses if you go in the evening, as you're facing right into the setting sun.)

Re: Flushing A&W | ||

We were at the Flushing A&W last night for the monthly cruise and Larry Molincoln <SP?> was there. For those who don't know who Larry is, he is the man who owned the A&W on Clio and Pierson Rd.'s in Flint. He also owned the Flushing A&W and now his son's have it. I talked to Larry for a few minutes and he is as sharp as ever. He remembered me and and my old car club when we used to use the Clio Rd. A&W as our base. It was great talking to him again.

Re A&W Lapeer | ||

I grew up 5 houses down from the A&W in Lapeer. It's no longer there. I remember getting root beer in a cone & squeezing it to get a drink of root beer from the vent hole. My Mom would get mad because the container would be half full by the time I got home.

Where was the Lapeer A & W? And what is there now?

The A&W in Lapeer was on South Main St. It's been a few years since I have been up that way, but Going by my trusty Lapeer phone book. I think it is now a Dairy Queen (766 South Main St.) It was owned in the 60's & 70's by Tom & Birdie Hoyt.

It can't be a Dairy Queen... A & W was 766, and Dairy Queen is 888.

I like to go to the A&W Restaurant down the street from where the Grand River Drive-In used to be. It's at Grand River near Orchard Lake Rd. in Farmington. They still have (last time I checked) curbside service!

There was a drive in/sit down joint on John R about a block from my house called The Madison (I think).Locals called it The Loop.It was about a block or two north of Wilkinson Junior High School.
Is it still there or is it long gone?I used to get a coke and a plate of great french fries there in the early 70's. "Permit me to introduce myself.My name is Mabuse.Dr Mabuse".

I'm just going by the phone book & it shows The Dairy Queen as being 766 South Main. (Sorry for the mistake) Hey my old house number was 786 South Main (I think the house was torn down) What is there now? Do you know?

Evilskippy, where on John R was the Loop? If it's close to me, I could drive by and see what's there now.

Alonzo it was a block south of 11 Mile Road on the west side of the street and just north of the Junior High School (Wilkinson). It was at the corner of Greig Ave and John R.

Hey guys, I live in Lapeer County and am in Lapeer several times a week. I will write these addresses down and look to see what is there next time I am there. It might be Tuesday before I get there but it will be this week.

Ok, checking my Lapeer phone book I was able to find out that the newer Auto Zone parts store is in fact at 766 South Main where the A&W was. My wife told me that Dairy Queen had moved a couple of years ago to a new location which I sort of remember. They built a new building which is at 888 South Main. I will look when I am in Lapeer for 786 South Main. There is a small strip mall in that area with a Subway and a few other shops. I'll keep you informed.

Re: A&W Lapeer | ||

Hey, not a problem. I have only been in Lapeer County for just about 10 years. I grew up in Flint but I have to say I love Lapeer so much more. Besides working in Flint for Delphi (AC Spark Plug) I also am a process server out of Lapeer District Court so I do get to see a lot of Lapeer and surrounding areas. If you have some older pics of the Lapeer area that would be great. I am living out in the Otter Lake area in the middle of the woods.

Re: Lapeer area whatnot | ||

Otter Lake? Cool! (I love otters.)
I wish I knew more about the Lapeer area. I'm pretty sure they used to have a Hardee's (now a Tim Hortons IIRC), as well as the A & W and the drive in theater... and the FOUR Rite Aids that are all still open (316 Neppesing, 1895 W. Genesee, 1254 N. Main, 871 S. Main)... SE Michigan has a Rite Aid fetish, as even dinky Metamora has one, and Davison has THREE, two of which are about 1/2 mile apart! And isn't it amazing they still have an old school JC Penney downtown? How common is THAT?! |
