Yeah, Otter Lake. There was in fact a Hardees where Tim Hortons is now. The old time Pennys is neat too. We get quite a few clothes there. They seem to have a lot of sales. I just like the whole Lapeer atmosphere compared to Flint.

A&W in Clawson | ||
|
I am amazed to learn that the A&W is still there. I went there in the late 1950's as a very young child. I always loved the place that had the best root beer that I have ever had, although they made me get the little kiddy frosted mug. I can vividly remember the car hops bringing the tray out to the car, and that you ordered on the remote speakers at each stall. some days the girls would deliver it on skates. They also had take out root beer in glass gallon jugs or a waxed cardboard container that was to to be used as a megaphone after the product was used and the ends were removed. I think these containers had some printing on them like "Go Clawson High" or something like that.

A&W Saugatuck | ||

There used to be an A&W shaped like a large root beer barrell in Saugatuck. It was empty when I was a kid (born in 1955).

The A&W south of the malls on m-37 in Grand Rapids sat on the corner of M-37 and 52nd street with the owners house right next door.I worked for them until they sold to the last owner in about 1996 I worked there thru the 80's and watched the drive-in give way to the drive-thru

Bostwick Lake Dog n' Suds | ||
|
Hmm, no one has mentioned the Dog n' Suds out at Bostwick Lake on M44 northeast of Grand Rapids. I'm sure it's long gone by now but I used to love going to it. I lived in Michigan from 1966 - 1971 in Novi, then in GR from 1971 - 1986. Now I live in Washington state...I miss the old Drive-ins!!! How about the Choo-Choo Grill in GR with the incredible peanut butter milkshakes? I was always to scared to go into the Fat Boy diner on Plainfield in GR...it looked like once you went in, you never came out-alive!

Fat Man Diner | ||
|
I have eaten in the Fat Man Diner years ago. You are not too far off of the mark. The inside decor looks as though it hasn't been changed since 1972. I remember the pay phone was a modified Bell Desk phone (really bizarre). It seemed like high school kids were hanging out there that night. The food didn't seem bad, but there was a really weird vibe there.

Crap. I was thinking of the Fat Boy Diner. Isn't the Fat Man a Fish Fry? Sorry about the mix up.

I was out in the garage and was looking longingly at my Chevelle and my son's Chevelle and thinking how much I wish winter would get over so we can get the cars out and head to the A&W. Seems like winter has been here forever. |

This winter just seems to be dragging. I really can't wait to get the cars out there. Now it's even worse. I have pneumonia and have been freezing. I wish spring would get here!!!!!

I WORK at an A&W | ||

Interesting thread. I work at a Kentucky Fried Chicken/A&W restaurant in Mesa(Phoenix), AZ. A lot of customers tell me about their childhood/experiences at A&Ws--Papa Burger, Mama Burger, Baby Burger, etc--and we do Have Frosty Mugs! Someday when I get a day off, I'll have to go to SONIC with a few friends
