Re: Michigan Drive-in Restaurants

Gary, Could you please give me more information on Dads Drive In on Fenton Road. Do you know where I could get a picture of what it looked like in 1956? My parents met there 50 years ago and eloped and I am having them a big anniversary party next month and I would like to know more about this place and get a picture if possible for the memory book.
Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you. |

Dad's Drive-In, IIRC was also known as Dad's Car-feteria and was later known as the Varsity Car-Feteria. It was located at the corner of Fenton Road and 12th Street and is long gone. I do recall a few years ago that a photo was published in The Flint Journal's "looking back" page. The Flint Public Library does maintain files of cataloged newspaper clippings. While I'm not sure it's in there, you can ask the reference librarian at the main library for any newspaper clippings of drive-in restaurants.

There is an A&W drive in service in Clawson right by Thomas Video.

Another one is on 12 Mile Rd. in Berkley. IMO, Eddie's on Jefferson has the best nostalgia value in the Detroit area.

A poster on the first page mentioned that there used to be an A&W in Hillman. My grandparents have lived there since before my parents got married in 1965 and I've never heard of or seen an A&W in Hillman.
However, most of the time, we take route 33 to go north and see my grandparents and always pass through Mio and Rose City. In one of those towns, there was an A&W where you could either eat in or drive up to and eat which closed in recent years. In the Bay City Mall was an A&W, but now it's called H&W. I think it's pretty much the same thing. As long as we are talking restaraunts, maybe someone can help me. Somewhere in the Detroit area, there was a restaraunt that looked like a cave inside. My family thinks it was Mountain Jack's, but a few years ago, we came to the place and it was closed. We looked in a window and saw an average restaraunt dining room. Was the cave restaraunt Mountain Jack's? If so, what happened to the cave interior? If not, what is/was the name of the cave interior restaraunt? |

What was the location you returned to and visited? That might help jog someone's memory.

I said all I could about it. My family isn't sure what the name of the place was, but we wonder if it was Mountain Jack's. The dining room of the place we viisted looked like the interior of a cave. Mountain Jack's was still around a few years ago (and might still be), but it didn't look like the place that had the cave-like interior.

They are dark inside, but don't really look like a cave. Mountain Jack's is still in business, they just have fewer locations. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Eddies Drive In is a favorite of mine. Located on Jefferson just south of 16 mile road. (Metro Parkway/Large Beaver) at 36111 Jefferson Ave., Harrison Twp., (586) 469-2345. They have pretty good food and great malts. Fri and Sat are classic car nights. The girls still come out on roller skates to take your order and all the while there are oldies being piped through the loud speakers.
If you get the chance, stop by this historical landmark, it's been there since 1950 and still going strong April 1 through late October weather permitting. It is one of the few ORIGINAL restaurants left from the 50's. It is surrounded by dam development!! While you are there, get a t-shirt, they look great! I'm pretty sure there was a sister drive in on the west side of the state (Grand Rapids?) but I went to the web site and it doesn't list it anymore. |

Grand Blanc hot dog stand
|
Anyone else been to the little hot dog stand in Grand Blanc? It's on the west side of Saginaw St. and they have a large sign on top that says "Home of the Original Red Sauce". I am not too sure if that is correct but their's is pretty good. I know Larry Melingcoln(SP?) has what Flint/Flushing considers the original red sauce. Larry bought the A&W on Clio Rd. at Pierson Rd. back in the 50's and the old guy he bought it from sold him the red sauce recipe with the understanding it would be kept secret and only in his family. At least that's the story I read I believe in the Flint Journal several years ago. Larry closed the Clio Rd. location a few years back (I'd have to go look and see the exact date). His son's are running the Flushing location and I see Larry and his wife when we go to the cruises and at the Sloan car show in June. He still works all the time.

A&W | ||
|
When I was a youngster, A&W drive-ins were my dad's idea of fine dining. Luckily, we had one less than half a mile away, on Nine Mile near Ryan Road. On Summer vacations, an A&W or Dog 'N Suds sign spelled "dinner" for our family.
Root beer just doesn't taste the same unless it's in a frosted A&W or Dog 'N Suds mug. |

With spring time around the corner, I will definitely be cruising up to the A&W in Clawson while making a few stops at Thomas
