I believe that there is still a Farrell's open in California. www.farrellsusa.com |

I definitely remember going there for my 12th birthday. What a long time ago!
I live in California, but I went to the Farrell's website, and there isn't one near where I live -- not that I need the calories anyway... |

Yes I got something there once and they came to my table singing at what a pig I am! hee! It was in Redford around Plymouth Rd. and Telegraph. Too bad they are gone.

If you remember when you ate the big ice cream dish called the pig troff they would sing and give you a button that said "I made a pig of myself at Farrell's"--believe it or not, I still have one of those buttons! (thanks mom)

Ah, yes --- my favorite was the "Gibson Girl": 5 flavors of sherbet in a huge brandy snifter, topped with banana nectar. Nummmm.....

I remember going there for a birthday many years ago and scarfing the "Pigs Trough". I have a "I made a pig of myself" lapel button to prove it LOL.

I always lived 2 a 2 hour drive away from the Detroit area but I had to go to Detroit a few times as a kid to see a heart specialist, a time or 2 for eyelid surgery (cyst removal and cosmetic reasons) and once to see a growth specialist (I grew at a slow rate and I ended up 5'3)
Anyone familiar with Dr. Lu (sp? he was asian) -eye surgeon, or Dr. Green (children's heart specialist, now retired if he's still living) or Dr. Wolf -growth specialist (I seem to recall him as wearing a black eye patch)? I also saw a Dr. Buchinski (sp? pronounced Boo-SHIN-ski) for another opinion about my vision). Anyway, on every trip, we'd stop at Farrell's for ice cream. I remember it being a really fun and popular place. When we last went to the area for my medical reasons in late 1986, it was gone. We were shocked because years before, when we were there last, it still seemed so popular and fun to be at. What happened? They couldn't have just gone out of business, could they have? |

I used to love that place. If memory serves the tiny room where you paid was floor-to-ceiling candy. Everything from jawbreakers to licorice rope.
Mmmm, sugar buzz just thinking about it. |

I was at a Farell's in Eugene Or in 1991. The servers there seemed lackluster. The food was good but the atmosphere was a little bit sad.

Damn! I found that same Farrell's (in Eugene) in 1996 back when I was living in Oregon. In the "better left un-visited" town of Klamath Falls.
Anyway, it was pretty good. I almost crashed my car when I saw it and rushed into the front door asking about the place. The cashier seemed to be used to this kind of thing. I'm pretty sure she said that (at the time) there were only two Farrell's operating in the country. Something about copyrights and whatnot. Anyway, it was pretty fun. Not as bright and lively as I remembered as a kid, but I have never figured out whether it was due to (a) the restaurant's age, or (b) my age. Floyd II |

I know of only one...it's in San Diego. A shame most of the parlor's are gone. I loved it too. But like Red Barn, Arthur Treacher's and so many others, they dwindle for obvious reasons and only the passing of time makes us remember the good times we had there, not the condition of the businesses when they closed.

Was there one of them in Flint? I think I went there around 1970, with people in candystripe vests working and making lots of noise.

Yes, they did wear the striped outfits and when it was somebodys birthday? Oh man, was it ever loud. I swear I remember one of the guys walking around w/ a giant bass drum attached to his chest.

I remember Farrell's. What fun we had. The one we used to go to was right in front of The Oakland Mall, 14 and Dequindre.

When I was a kid, the Farrell's near Oakland Mall was *the* place to go for birthdays and outrageous ice cream treats for special occasions.
Many years later, I was a bona fide adult with a job in an office near 12 Mile and Southfield Road, and would drop in at that Farrell's about once a week to actually take advantage of their food menu - the "Ham-It-Up" burger was out of this world, and their Chef's Salad was nothing to kick about, either. |

I tried to be "a pig" but couldn't do it. I wonder if anyone did? I imagine so. These days, I try to take it easy on the eating since my weight
loss, but back then I sure didn't care. It was a great place, I used to go to the one in Southfield.
