My first memory of this drive in, was going with my parents in a station wagon. The best way to watch was to park backwards with the tailgate open, lounging on blankets and pillows in the back. If you planned to stay late for the double feature, kids often wore pajamas - the easier to carry to bed when they got home.
Some years later, friends and I (and I mean car-less 12-14 year olds) that lived in the neighborhood would sneak in to the Bel-Air by way of Conner Ave. behind Holy Cross Hospital. It was never a problem to hang out in the back row. (To be honest, it also was not a unusual for someone in the underage group to have a bottle of pop-wine - Ripple comes to mind.) Up near the screen (the one with its back toward 8 Mile) were a couple of swingsets. These were especially fun after consuming the pop wine.
Later, as we reached the age to drive, it was a popular date spot. I remember some Cheech & Chong comedies, and concert films in the 70's (there were a LOT of those back in the day.) Maybe it was just me (I doubt it!), but if any film had an actual plot, I usually had to see it a second time at an indoor theater, being too distracted at first viewing by afore-mentioned date.
I think the drive-ins that still exist are now seasonal, summertime venues. However, I am positive I went to the Bel-Air in the middle of Winter. I remember snow plows clearing some rows out. One time my car battery died, on one of those freezing nights, and a helpful attendant saved the day with the use of jumper cables.
I grew up with the Bel-Air Drive-In & I was sorry to see the it close. The last drive-in I went to was the Ford-Wyomng, and saw a cop movie like Beverly Hills Cop, or maybe it was Lethal Weapon. It was at the end of the 80's. I do remember getting some wine coolers (for nostalgia mostly - because I don't really like wine. Honest!)
